Living in the Washington DC area, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit the Smithsonian’s National Zoo many many times. The Zoo is large, spacious and always modernizing. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute<\/a> is primarily funded through a combination of federal appropriations (tax dollars). This covers about 70% of operating costs, and private sources. The remaining 30% and other expenditures are generated through philanthropic contributions, endowments, grants, and retail revenues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yeah but what about the traffic and parking! If you’re a DCist, you know there will be traffic and that does not include traffic you will encounter on the 495 beltway in DC. The parking is at a premium if you can find a spot at the National Zoo and cost $30 to $40. Good luck trying to find street parking and if you do, make sure you are proficient at parallel parking! LOL<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the best things about the Maryland Zoo, there is no traffic to speak of, plus free and accessible parking. If you live in a nearby county in Maryland getting to the the zoo and finding parking will be a breeze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, is smaller and admission costs a bundle if you have no coupons or specials event tickets or membership. The Zoo receives annual operational and capital grants from the State of Maryland<\/a> and the City of Baltimore<\/a>. It also receives additional regional contributions from Baltimore, Howard, and Carroll counties. The Maryland Zoo also relies heavily on individual donations. Legacy Giving<\/a>, animal adoptions, and Corporate Sponsors<\/a> to fund animal care, education, and wildlife conservation programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A significant portion of operational income is generated through Zoo Admissions<\/strong>, Membership Programs, facility rentals, and attraction fees. The best thing to do is become a member for a few dollars more than a single visit. Then visit anytime you want and as often as you want. Plus, you will receive invites to special events, offered discounts, special viewings and best of all you’ll be supporting the Maryland Zoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Support the zoo by visiting the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. It’ll save time and the heart break of endless brake lights. Parking is free and when you’re finished at the zoo you can stop by the Rawlings Conservatory<\/a> or eat dinner in Hampden<\/a> or visit the Baltimore Museum of Art<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
