What is Outsider Art...
"creativity is an objective truth that cannot be taught", artist Kelly Billette
"The ironic part is the early modernist movements were trying to emulate (or just 'assimilate' the raw power of) this kind of art...(there was also a movement to make purely primitive art). While every one was trying to unlearn western art, there were these people that never learned, but to some degree wish that they could, possibly brought on by
century's of hierarchal control of what is right in art (with the school of thought that art is a 'craft' that must improve). Art is not about hand-eye coordination and technique, Art is about getting into a zone to create magic!" Source - John Lindsey
"Paul Gauguin, who looked to the peasant life in France, and later to the islands of the Caribbean and Polynesia in the 1880's, is regarded by many as the first artist who was on the right track. He claimed that the "primitive" arts provided a nourishment that the "civilized" arts could no longer do. And we can add Henri Rousseau here, who is credited as founding the tradition of Naive art." "Outsiders? Primitives? Self-Taught? Whatever you call these artists, their work is full of wonders." Source - City Paper
"Works of art -- paintings, drawings, sculptures, assemblages, and idiosyncratic gardens and other outdoor constructions -- produced by people who have had little or no formal training in art and who produce (or at least began by producing) art without regard to the mainstream art world's recognition or marketplace.
These are people who make art for themselves or their immediate community, usually without recognizing themselves as artists, at least until some collector or expert comes along to inform that they are making art.
There are a number of problems with the concept, however. There is implied elitism, for one, since outsider art implies there is someone inside designating these others as outside. And just what are they outside of? Art schools? Museums? The gallery world? Culture altogether (which some see in the extremes of insane art -- the original paradigm for outsider art)? " Source
