Out of Order 2026 at Maryland Art Place

Weather was perfect for a night out supporting the local community and people watching but never ever ask an artist what they do for a living, some answers would be too complex without additional time. 🙂

My first year doing Out of Order at Maryland Art Place (Inner Harbor) was 2004, that generation of artist really made an effort to top one another in a very friendly but competitive way, no one ever wanted to be the low artist on the totem pole, no one wanted to be accused of exhibiting “junk” at a salon type show. At that time hanging a piece for Out of Order required an entry fee of $10, in return; free entrance to the event, catered food and always lots to drink. For those artists desiring to bring a friend, you could purchase a MAP membership and receive a free ticket to Out of Order! For a $30 membership plus a $10 hanging fee you could impress your non-artist date with great eats, unlimited drink and endless conversations with artists! I believe it changed to a “free” event starting 2011-ish with no entry fee. Sadly, I saw the art fall off a bit and when MAP moved to it’s current location on Saratoga St, the art work had been on a steady decline, IDK why. It might be time, and I see no reason why Maryland Art Place would not charge an entry fee of $10. I spoke to several artist during the evening and no one said an entry fee would stop them from participating in the future. It’s a benefit for an organization doing good things for the local community.

That said, the 2026 version of Out of Order was an improvement over recent years. To me, the art on walls seemed to be more evenly balanced. Also noticed, there were many more smaller “sculptures” than normal, pedestals were all over the place. A big surprise were pizza boxes from HomeSlyce Pizza! It was a free-for-all grab-a-slice swarm. They went quickly but I spotted another round of pizza delivered a bit later. As usual, the upstairs provided beer, wine, non alcoholic drinks as well as water. You could have a smoke outside, but MAP needs to put an ash bucket or something to catch all the butts. Crowds were very good throughout the evening. Haven’t heard yet about sales. For those that don’t know, it’s an online and live auction. I miss the old days when you could scratch down your bid with a pencil and keep an eye on it to see if you’ve been outbid but unfortunately collecting the funds after the auction became an issue, but it was fun while it lasted (20+ years). The Basement is where you want to relax and get away, seating, tables and a real bar. All in all a fun evening, will probably do it again. Enjoy the photos…

Re-Do Emyn Muil

Emyn Muil 4/26 Re-do toned from late last summer, very pleased with results.

Was never that happy with initial results, felt it lacked some definition and color tone was WAY off, but always liked the results of the texturing. I “re-stained” the piece with a thin coat of black and wiped away parts hoping to develop the shadow areas and bring out a little more detail. The “moon” was equally disappointing but redoing this section would mean repainting the entire piece, which to me is a “no can do”.

Close up and Happy Mistakes

After trying to rescue an older piece that was beyond a simple re-do, I cut it down and ripped off some of the canvas, ended up throwing away everything but a small piece of canvas. The inside (back) of the canvas is what you see here, the resulting texture is very pleasing…

Emyn Muil detail of the “Moon”, always interesting how one stumbles across Happy Accidents…

Fly me to the Moon

Fly me to the moon
Let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like

When the moon hits your eye
Like a big pizza pie, that’s amóre
When the world seems to shine
Like you’ve had too much wine, that’s amóre – ver. Dean Martin

re: the Moon

The Moon has been an important source of inspiration and knowledge in human history, having been crucial to cosmography, mythology, religion, art, time keeping, natural science and spaceflight. An overwhelming majority of my wall based pieces includes a celestial body, round shapes which could or could not be a moon. It functions both as the center point that keeps my pieces organized as well as a starting place for viewers to carry on ;

A few of my faves, will add as i run across my work…

The Maze of Emyn Muil

Textured Mixed Media Art Work Rick Santiago
Emyn Muil, Art by Rick Santiago

A Different Technique

Mixed Media – Textured on Canvas, 26″ x 18″ Have not made a textured piece in years. Discovered yet another “shortcut” which is a relief. This one took “one take”, so I’m pretty happy with result. My fascination with the visuals you find in the LOTR is still so strong after all these years. You can find this one at the Mount Royal Tavern in Baltimore through the 1st week of November during their Halloween Show.

About

The Maze of Emyn Muil is a desolate, labyrinthine region of jagged hills and deep gullies in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, located between the Eastemnet of Rohan and the Dead Marshes. It is a treacherous and confusing area where Frodo and Sam become lost at the start of The Two Towers, and where they are eventually found and guided by Gollum. The name “Emyn Muil” translates to “Hills of the Mists,” which highlights its confusing and disorienting nature.

Golf 2025

Married with children
Married with Children, don’t know if this person plays golf

My Golf Ball for 2025!

Starting in 2023 I decided not to play ANY golf ball over $30/dz. My criteria, it had to have a urethane cover, 3 pc construction, 85+ compression and NOT have 318 dimples. Most important, I had to feel comfortable with short game around the green and some positive putting results.

Golf balls I’ve played extensively includes the original Srixon Z-Star XV. The Srixon I played was a 4pc with a urethane cover at @100 Compression, it was probably the longest golf ball off the tee I’ve ever played. Worked well from tee to green but I could never really putt with the ball. Last couple years, the Srixon went from a 4pc to 3pc construction and that’s when I decided to not play it anymore. No matter what Srixon claimed, it just wasn’t for me.

Other golf balls I’ve played includes, Vice Pro, Vice Pro Plus, Kirkland V3, Bridgestone e12 Contact and Taylomade Tour Response.

In the fall of 2023, I started looking at different golf balls, by end of year it came down to the Kirkland V3 (2023-24) and Oncore Golf Elixr (2022). Chose the Oncore Elixr due to it’s performance in windy conditions, rock solid through the wind. Oncore Elixr is a 3pc construction, with a urethane cover and @85 compression. I could really putt with this, I probably at least doubled my birdie count during league play! Off the tee it was surprisingly long, approach shots did not roll out and around the greens superb control. But by mid season, it was harder to find, in the Fall it was no longer available through Oncore website. (as of mid March 2025 the Elixr was finally available again) I moved on…

Legato LTX 3085 as found on Amazon

Legato 2025

Never heard of Legato but started to read others opinions about this odd golf ball and decided to give them a try starting in December 2024. The Legato is a urethane covered, 3pc, 85+/- compression with 350 dimples, pretty much my baseline for a golfball. Can be found on Amazon at retail for $29/dozen, often on sale for $25 and currently (March 28, 2025) $18.99/dozen.

I have not yet played this ball in warm temps but have played the Legato exclusively for 12+ plus rounds weather permitting. I’ve found driver distance to be the same as most any other urethane covered ball I’ve played, in other words there’s no distance loss or gain. Irons are a bit different, I feel that the Legato maybe touch longer. Especially noticeable from 8 iron through gap wedge. Some have opined that it launches lower than other golf balls, for me, I did not notice differences in launch pattern throughout the bag. I’ve never had problems holding greens and this is true with the Legato. When struck solid this ball feels great and moves through even windy conditions without issues. With chipping and putting I have no complaints. Durabilty is up there with the best, I have not found one cover cut on any shots. The ball feels “heavy and firm” throughout the bag, not a springy nor clicky.

For 2025 golf season, I will use the Legato during league play. I just don’t think playing a Legato will cost me any strokes just like I don’t think a Titleist, Taylormade, Bridgestone or Srixon will save me any strokes. Currently playing to a 6 handicap in 2025.

The 3 Body Problem Show

The three-body problem describes the motion of three-point mass particles under their mutual gravitational interactions. This is a classical problem that covers a large range of situations in astrodynamics. An instance of such situations is the motion of the Moon about the Earth under the influence of the Sun.

“3 Body Problem is based on a real math problem that is so complex it’s impossible to solve. The three-body problem is a centuries-old physics question that puzzled Isaac Newton. It describes the orbits of three bodies, like planets or stars, trapped in each other’s gravity.”

“Instead of stabilizing, the third element creates chaos and causes the objects to fly around and interact in completely unpredictable ways — spinning off into space, crashing into each other, or bouncing off one another’s gravitational spheres and careening in completely different directions.”

Creativity is an Objective Truth that Cannot be Taught…

Attended Friday evening and weather was not cooperative, misty rain throughout my visit.

I made it through most of the exhibits/buildings but missed the Fox Building. The Mount Royal Station building, fiber arts, had some very outstanding presentations, plenty to see here. Dolphin Design Center sparse and mostly uninteresting and some uninspiring maybe I just don’t find this type of work to my liking.
